On 17 December 2024, the Riksdag adopted the Total Defence Bill for the period 2025–2030. The Government's proposals mean a substantial reinforcement of Sweden’s total defence, consisting of both military and civilian activities.
The Government is announcing a new action plan to combat racism and hate crime. Through this concerted action, the Government is taking important steps in the efforts to free Sweden from racism and hate crime. The efforts in this area will be accurate, measurable and long-term. Schools, judiciary, welfare and working life will be in focus.
On 16–17 December, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is participating in a Summit in Tallinn within the framework of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) regional defence cooperation partnership.
The EU has adopted a fifteenth sanctions package in response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. These sanctions are one of the primary tools to counteract Russia and support Ukraine by constraining the Russian State’s revenues and military capability. The new sanctions package includes additional measures against the ‘shadow fleet’, circumvention of sanctions and third-country support to Russia.
On 9 December the Minister for Foreign Affairs launched a strategy on cyber and digital issues in foreign and security policy. This strategy aims to enhance Sweden’s security, prosperity and competitiveness through a cohesive and integrated foreign and security policy on cyber and digital issues.
Sweden’s migration policy is undergoing a paradigm shift. The Government is intensifying its efforts to reduce, in full compliance with Sweden’s international commitments, the number of migrants coming irregularly to Sweden. Labour immigration fraud and abuses must be stopped and the ‘shadow society’ combated.
